April School Holidays

Updated: Apr 4, 2019

And just as one lot of school holidays finishes, you already need to start planning what to do with your children for the next lot. After all, after a 10 week school term full of drop-offs, pick-ups, packing lunch boxes and running around to swimming lessons - it's important to cherish the holidays as dedicated bonding time with the kids (plus celebrate with a wine or two once they head to bed).

Sydney is always one of the most active locations to spend the school holiday period, and as usual there are new shows, exhibitions, experiences and activities being announced weekly. We will keep this list up to date, so check back to see any new things that may make this April school holidays a memorable one for your family.

This year we're lucky that the Easter Long Weekend ties into the school holidays, meaning heaps more time to take them to see Sydney's iconic annual festivities. The Easter Show will run from the 12th April - 23 April at the Sydney Showground in Sydney Olympic Park. First held in 1823, the Show is Australia's largest annual ticketed event, attracting over 850,000 attendees on average, and it's easy to see why with so many things to see and do ranging from animals, arts & crafts, the wood-chopping (our personal favourite), showjumping and rides galore! Early bird tickets are now available, so jump on the website and plan something to look forward to for your family this April.

The much loved story of Hush and Grandma Poss comes to life on stage! Share in the timeless story of friendship and magic in this brand new stage adaptation of the much-loved Australian classic book by Mem Fox. You couldn't ask for a better location than the iconic Sydney Opera House to sit back with your little ones and connect over a classic Australian story. The Possum Magic runs from 15 April to 28 April with tickets starting at $29 which can be purchased here.

Junior Keepers is a specially designed hands-on day for children aged 8 - 11 years old who are keen to work with animals or in the conservation field when they grow up.

Guided by our team of experienced and dedicated staff, small groups of up to 15 participants will learn the daily routines and responsibilities of a Taronga Keeper. Through a range of interactive activities and special behind the scenes visits, Junior Keeper participants will have up close encounters with some of Taronga’s Australian Native animals and learn how to care for and protect them into the future.

Sugar Republic is Australia’s ‘must see’ exhibition for anyone who ever hit a sugar high, slammed a Tim Tam or jumped for joy at the sound of a Mr. Whippy van. It's not only the perfect experience for children, but a chance to relive your childhood by playing in a huge grown-up ball pit, stepping inside a cookie house, exploring Charlie’s Chocolate Factory, swinging in a candy-filled room, relaxing in The Big Gum Bubble, playing in a licorice playroom, jumping out of a giant birthday cake and much, much more! Tickets start from $29 for children and $35 for adults, and children under 2 have free entry! Purchase online in advance to select you preferred entry time.

Easter is one of the best time's of the year at The Grounds of Alexandria. With colourful laneways, special Easter themed treats, and of course the infamous Giant Egg that gets cracked on Easter Sunday you'll be whisked away to a land of magic here.
